Good point! Recently, I ran into a very good friend who is unsaved while with my Christian friends. She has always been a great friend but she cusses like a sailor. When I saw her my heart sank. My Christian friends looked mortified and she was just as she always is, herself. I had to go home and repent. Who am I? I am worse than she is because I wasn’t a good friend to her that day. I was seeing her through the eyes of people who didn’t know her instead of my own eyes of love and respect for her and all that she does for others.

Excellent point! We need more of these reminders.

Actually, you said it a little more succinctly than I did, but this is what I was attempting convey. Those who fixated on the law to the exclusion of love resented and even hated Jesus, although in the law it forbids them to hate their fellow Israelite.

But as usually happens with us humans, we leave out what doesn’t fit our preferences or ignore them by explaining them away.

From logical standpoints that is correct but I tend to look at it from our human reasoning. If all we know is the law, we expect the messiah to come looking like the law. When the messiah looks like love, it messed with their minds.

On Friday night I preached at a legalistic church. I suggested rather than turning their noses up at Halloween that they instead greet the children at their door nicely and pass out candy and bless the children to have a safe night. I suggested that we be LIGHT on a DARK night. Instead of letting darkness rule for a evening take back the night and shed some light on the situation since that would be subduing the earth and dominion authority. They looked horrified. I’m sure their pastor had a lot of fixing to do.

You may be right. Yet the Psalms and prophets gave them all the tests they needed to know Jesus when He arrived. Deuteronomy 18 makes the test of a true prophet so clear they should have at least waited once they saw the evidence of His power to see what would become of Him.

But they didn’t. They fought Him to the point of killing Him These men knew the law well yet they remained stubborn and instead of humbly discussing with Him what He stood for, they tried to discredit Him and fought Him at every turn. Even when Nicodemus warned them they refused to listen. In Paul’s era, Gamaliel warned them of the same thing yet they eventually fought to kill off the believers.

Paul claimed these men were without excuse.

Just a thought here as I read your post. Could it be that since there was no guidance, no word of God, no conviction, they simply hung on to the only thing they had, the law? And as man always does, he adds his interpretation to it and makes it bigger than it has to be.

Since in their lifetime, or in the lifetime of their ancestors that they had met, they had never truly heard the voice of God, so Jesus had to look bizarre. It was foreign and shook the only foundation they had left which was the law, which may have been a pretty freaky proposition to a people who based their whole religion on their relationship with God.

When I read this story I am struck by the scene. Jesus took his time. Timing is something I pray for. I am more of a reaction than a thought in these circumstances.

I believe the timing was critical. I also love his questions. He does this throughout scripture and it’s wise. He asks poignant questions that cause you to search your heart. Love this!

I love his grace. No big explanation and no need to really. If we believe God judges the heart then he saw beyond her immediate circumstances to the HOW she got there. None of us will ever know the depths of despair a human has endured and why they are where they are, like the Father does.
